RisConFix: LLM-based Automated Repair of Risk-Prone Drone Configurations

Flight control software is typically designed with numerous configurable parameters governing multiple functionalities, enabling flexible adaptation to mission diversity and environmental uncertainty. Although developers and manufacturers usually provide recommendations for these parameters to ensure safe and stable operations, certain combinations of parameters with recommended values may still lead to unstable flight behaviors, thereby degrading the drone's robustness. To this end, we propose a Large Language Model (LLM) based approach for real-time repair of risk-prone configurations (named RisConFix) that degrade drone robustness. RisConFix continuously monitors the drone's operational state and automatically triggers a repair mechanism once abnormal flight behaviors are detected. The repair mechanism leverages an LLM to analyze relationships between configuration parameters and flight states, and then generates corrective parameter updates to restore flight stability. To ensure the validity of the updated configuration, RisConFix operates as an iterative process; it continuously monitors the drone's flight state and, if an anomaly persists after applying an update, automatically triggers the next repair cycle. We evaluated RisConFix through a case study of ArduPilot (with 1,421 groups of misconfigurations). Experimental results show that RisConFix achieved a best repair success rate of 97% and an optimal average number of repairs of 1.17, demonstrating its capability to effectively and efficiently repair risk-prone configurations in real time.


Automated System-level Testing of Unmanned Aerial Systems

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) rely on various avionics systems that are safety-critical and mission-critical. A major requirement of international safety standards is to perform rigorous system-level testing of avionics software systems. The current industrial practice is to manually create test scenarios, manually/automatically execute these scenarios using simulators, and manually evaluate outcomes. The test scenarios typically consist of setting certain flight or environment conditions and testing the system under test in these settings. The state-of-the-art approaches for this purpose also require manual test scenario development and evaluation. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to automate the system-level testing of the UAS. The proposed approach (AITester) utilizes model-based testing and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to automatically generate, execute, and evaluate various test scenarios. The test scenarios are generated on the fly, i.e., during test execution based on the environmental context at runtime. The approach is supported by a toolset. We empirically evaluate the proposed approach on two core components of UAS, an autopilot system of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and cockpit display systems (CDS) of the ground control station (GCS). The results show that the AITester effectively generates test scenarios causing deviations from the expected behavior of the UAV autopilot and reveals potential flaws in the GCS-CDS.


Design of UAV flight state recognition and trajectory prediction system based on trajectory feature construction

With the impact of artificial intelligence on the traditional UAV industry, autonomous UAV flight has become a current hot research field. Based on the demand for research on critical technologies for autonomous flying UAVs, this paper addresses the field of flight state recognition and trajectory prediction of UAVs. This paper proposes a method to improve the accuracy of UAV trajectory prediction based on UAV flight state recognition and verifies it using two prediction models. Firstly, UAV flight data acquisition and data preprocessing are carried out; secondly, UAV flight trajectory features are extracted based on data fusion and a UAV flight state recognition model based on PCA-DAGSVM model is established; finally, two UAV flight trajectory prediction models are established and the trajectory prediction errors of the two prediction models are compared and analyzed after flight state recognition. The results show that: 1) the UAV flight state recognition model based on PCA-DAGSVM has good recognition effect. 2) compared with the traditional UAV trajectory prediction model, the prediction model based on flight state recognition can effectively reduce the prediction error.


Sensor-Augmented Neural Adaptive Bitrate Video Streaming on UAVs

Recent advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology have revolutionized a broad class of civil and military applications. However, the designs of wireless technologies that enable real-time streaming of high-definition video between UAVs and ground clients present a conundrum. Most existing adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithms are not optimized for the air-to-ground links, which usually fluctuate dramatically due to the dynamic flight states of the UAV. In this paper, we present SA-ABR, a new sensor-augmented system that generates ABR video streaming algorithms with the assistance of various kinds of inherent sensor data that are used to pilot UAVs. By incorporating the inherent sensor data with network observations, SA-ABR trains a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) model to extract salient features from the flight state information and automatically learn an ABR algorithm to adapt to the varying UAV channel capacity through the training process. SA-ABR does not rely on any assumptions or models about UAV's flight states or the environment, but instead, it makes decisions by exploiting temporal properties of past throughput through the long short-term memory (LSTM) to adapt itself to a wide range of highly dynamic environments. We have implemented SA-ABR in a commercial UAV and evaluated it in the wild. We compare SA-ABR with a variety of existing state-of-the-art ABR algorithms, and the results show that our system outperforms the best known existing ABR algorithm by 21.4% in terms of the average quality of experience (QoE) reward.
